If you have 2.5 baths or more, tankless usually pays off in 5–7 years on gas savings and outlasts two tanks. Smaller homes stay with tank.
Is the expansion tank really required?
Yes — Texas code requires it on any closed water system (which is basically every home with a backflow preventer or pressure-reducing valve).
